How to use Pixel art upscaler
- Choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image within 10 MiB, 16,000,000 pixels and 8,192 pixels on either side.
- Choose 2×, 4× or 8×. Both the width and height grow by that factor; the output must stay within the same pixel and side limits.
- Select Enlarge image and compare the original with the processed preview. If the output would exceed a limit, choose a smaller factor or source image.
- Select Download PNG to save a separate file. Keep your original if you need its original dimensions or metadata.
What nearest-neighbor enlargement does
At 2×, each source pixel becomes a square of four output pixels. At 4× it becomes sixteen, and at 8× it becomes sixty-four. This preserves the block structure of pixel art instead of blending adjacent colors with image smoothing.
A larger file is not a more detailed image. This method does not recover a lost texture, restore a blurry face, or add lines that were absent from the source. Compression artifacts in a JPEG also become larger. PNG is often a useful source when you want to retain sharp pixel boundaries.
Calculate whether the output fits
The browser processes one image at a time. The source and output each have a limit of 16,000,000 pixels and 8,192 pixels per side. For example, a 1,000 × 1,000 image fits at 4× because the output is 4,000 × 4,000, or 16,000,000 pixels. The same source exceeds the pixel limit at 8×.
The 10 MiB limit applies to the selected file's compressed size, not to its output PNG size. Browser memory limits vary, so even an image inside these limits can fail to export on a constrained device. A failure produces an error and no downloadable output.
A separate output, processed locally
The enlargement code reads the selected image in this browser page and draws a new canvas. It sends no image bytes to a server and saves no processing history. Downloading creates a PNG rather than overwriting the source.
These statements apply to this tool's image processing code, not to browser extensions, the operating system, or normal requests for the page itself. Review the PNG in your intended editor or game before using it. This tool changes raster dimensions; it does not produce a vector image.
Which format do you need?
| Your next task | Input or choice | Output or result |
|---|---|---|
| Keep original dimensions | The source stays at its original width and height. | Width and height are multiplied by 2, 4 or 8. |
| Add missing visual detail | Contains only the detail already in the source. | Repeats source pixels; no new detail is generated. |
| Keep the original asset for later edits | Keep the original image separately. | Use the separate PNG for the enlarged raster asset. |
Questions about this tool
Does this use AI?
No. It uses browser Canvas with image smoothing disabled. It repeats pixels rather than predicting new details.
Which files can I choose?
PNG, JPEG and WebP images up to 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes). The browser must be able to decode the file. SVG, GIF and other formats are not accepted.
Why did 8× fail for my image?
Scaling both sides by eight makes the pixel count sixty-four times larger. The resulting image must remain within 16,000,000 pixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Choose a lower scale or a smaller source.
Does it upload or overwrite my image?
The processing code sends no selected image bytes to a server. It reads the original and creates a separate PNG download, without overwriting the source.
